If you moved to the Valley from the Midwest or the Pacific Northwest, you probably noticed inside of a month. Your hair got straw-like. Your color faded faster. Your scalp started itching in a way it never did before.

You did not develop a condition. You changed water.

What is actually in Phoenix water

Our municipal water runs very hard, generally in the 250 to 350 parts per million range for total dissolved solids depending on which source is feeding your area. That is calcium and magnesium, mostly.

Those minerals do not rinse away. They deposit on the hair shaft and at the scalp, and they build up over weeks and months.

Chlorine and chloramine from treatment add to it. So does the fact that most people here wash more often because of heat and sweat.

What buildup does

On the hair shaft. Minerals coat the cuticle. Hair feels rough, looks dull, tangles more, and stops absorbing conditioner properly. Color deposits unevenly and fades fast. Blondes get brassy.

At the follicle. This is the part people miss. Mineral deposits combine with sebum and product residue and harden around the follicle opening. Under a scalp camera it looks like a pale ring or plug at the base of the hair.

That is where the itching comes from. It is also why your dandruff shampoo has not worked, because a lot of what people call dandruff here is not a fungal issue at all.

On product performance. You can use excellent products and get mediocre results because nothing is reaching the scalp.

What does not fix it

Washing more. That strips the ends and does nothing to the mineral bond at the root.

Most clarifying shampoos. They handle product buildup reasonably well. Mineral buildup needs a chelating agent, and most drugstore clarifiers do not have one at a useful concentration.

Conditioner. It sits on top of the deposit.

What does

A shower filter helps going forward and we recommend one to almost everyone. It does not remove what is already there.

For that, you need chelation and mechanical removal at the scalp. That is essentially what a Japanese head spa does: a clarifying and chelating cleanse, physical exfoliation worked in section by section, then a micro-bubble rinse that lifts loosened debris out of the follicle.

The before and after on the scalp camera is usually the convincing part. Same spot, same magnification, twenty minutes apart.

Our head spa starts at $130 for 60 minutes.

Realistic expectations

Your hair will feel different immediately and it holds for several weeks. Color will take better at your next appointment, and your stylist will probably comment on it.

What it will not do is permanently solve a water problem. If you do nothing else, buildup returns on the same schedule. Most of our regulars come every six to eight weeks, or every four if they have long hair or wear a helmet.
