Search head spa and you will find a lot of language about stimulating growth and revitalizing follicles. It is vague on purpose.

Here is the version we give people in the room.

What a head spa does not do

It does not regrow hair from a follicle that has miniaturized or died.

It does not treat androgenetic alopecia, which is the pattern hair loss most people are actually dealing with.

It does not change your hair growth cycle.

It is not a substitute for minoxidil, finasteride, PRP, or a dermatologist's evaluation.

If someone tells you a scalp treatment will regrow your hairline, they are selling you something.

What it does do

Removes buildup from around the follicle. Sebum, product residue, dead skin and mineral deposits from our hard water accumulate at the follicle opening. Under a scope it looks like a pale plug or ring.

A blocked follicle is not a healthy environment for the hair growing out of it. Clearing it does not create new growth and it does remove an obstacle.

Reduces inflammation and itch. Chronic scalp irritation means chronic scratching, which causes mechanical damage and breakage. Less itch means less damage.

Improves circulation temporarily. Massage increases blood flow to the area during and shortly after. Whether that translates to growth is not established. Do not build expectations on it.

Reduces breakage. A lot of what people perceive as hair loss is breakage rather than shedding. Healthier scalp and better hair condition means less of it, which reads as more hair.

That last one is worth sitting with. If your hair is breaking mid-shaft, addressing that will visibly change your density without a single new hair growing.

The distinction that matters

Shedding is hair releasing from the follicle. Normal is 50 to 100 a day. Seasonal spikes are real.

Breakage is hair snapping along the shaft. This is a damage problem and it is very treatable.

Thinning is the diameter of individual hairs decreasing and follicles producing finer hair over time. This is the one that needs medical treatment.

We can help meaningfully with breakage. We can improve the environment for shedding-related concerns. We cannot address thinning and we will tell you when that is what we are seeing.

What we will say if we see pattern loss

We scope your scalp before we start. If what we see looks like miniaturization, a receding pattern, or defined patches, we will tell you and suggest you see a dermatologist.

That conversation happens regularly and it is not comfortable. It is still the right thing to do, because the treatments that work for pattern loss work better the earlier you start them.

Time matters more than almost anything else with hair loss. Spending a year on scalp treatments while a treatable condition progresses is a bad outcome.

Where a head spa genuinely fits into a hair plan

Alongside medical treatment, not instead of it.

If you are using minoxidil, buildup at the follicle interferes with absorption. A clean scalp is a better delivery surface.

If you have had PRP or are considering it, scalp health supports it.

If your dermatologist has ruled out pathology and your concern is condition and density appearance, this is squarely in our lane.

The Phoenix factor

Hard water at 250 to 350 ppm, intense UV, chlorine, and heat styling to manage the damage from all of the above.

Our clients' hair takes more abuse than most. A good share of what looks like hair loss here is cumulative damage, and that is fixable.
