If you have curly or coily hair, you have probably had the experience of someone touching it who clearly did not know what to do. It makes people cautious about booking anything involving their scalp.
Fair. So here is exactly how we handle it.
Why textured hair benefits more, not less
Sebum travels down a straight hair shaft easily. It does not travel down a curl pattern well, which is why curly hair tends to be drier at the ends while the scalp can still accumulate.
Curly and coily routines also involve more product by volume: leave-ins, creams, gels, oils, sometimes all in the same wash day. Those products are heavier and they are designed to stay put.
Combine that with less frequent washing, protective styles worn for weeks, and Phoenix hard water at 250 to 350 ppm, and you get significant buildup at the follicle.
Under the scope, this is often the most dramatic before and after we see.
What we do differently
Sectioning matters more. We work in smaller sections with more of them, and the exfoliation is done at the scalp without disturbing the length.
Detangling happens with intention, not speed. Fingers and wide-tooth combs, from the ends up, on saturated hair with slip. This is the step that goes wrong in the wrong hands.
Water temperature stays moderate. Hot water lifts the cuticle and roughens texture.
Product selection changes. No heavy silicones, no stripping sulfates that leave coils squeaking and brittle. Chelating for the mineral buildup, then something with actual slip.
The micro-bubble rinse is a real advantage here. It lifts debris out of the follicle without mechanical scrubbing through the hair itself, which is exactly what you want when scrubbing would mean tangling.
The drying conversation
This is the part to discuss when you book.
We can rough dry, diffuse, or leave you damp to finish at home. We do not blow dry textured hair straight with a nozzle unless you ask for it.
If you have a specific styling routine and specific products you trust, bring them. We are happy to apply your leave-in and let you go finish at home. A lot of clients prefer that and it is completely reasonable.
Protective styles, locs and extensions
Braids or twists. We can work the scalp directly between sections. Tell us when you book so we schedule appropriately.
Locs. Scalp cleansing and treatment is possible and it requires a different approach. Call us at (602) 391-8889 to talk it through before booking.
Sew-ins and wefts. Depends on the install. Call first.
Recent relaxer or keratin treatment. Tell us. We will adjust products and may recommend waiting.
Prep
Come with hair that has not been freshly washed. Buildup is what we are removing and we would rather see it.
Take out any style you want removed beforehand, or tell us and we will allot time.
Bring your own leave-in and styler if you have a routine you trust.
Plan for the appointment to run long if your hair is dense or long. Ninety minutes is the better booking.
What it will not do
It will not change your curl pattern.
It will not regrow hair. If you are dealing with traction alopecia from tension styles, see a dermatologist. We can improve scalp health and we cannot reverse follicle damage, and we will say so.
It is not a substitute for your stylist.
