Tirzepatide questions, answered
In the head-to-head trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine, 751 adults took one or the other for 72 weeks. Those on tirzepatide lost an average of 20.2 percent of their body weight against 13.7 percent on semaglutide, and about 31 percent of them lost at least a quarter of their starting weight against 16 percent. Results vary, that trial used the branded products at maximum tolerated doses, and the better average is not automatically the better choice for one particular person.
Tirzepatide starts at 2.5mg once weekly and can step up through 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg and 12.5mg toward a 15mg ceiling. Most people never need the top of that ladder. Your provider decides each step with you, and will tell you what a change means for your cost before it happens.
The side effects are the same family as any GLP-1 medication: nausea, fullness, constipation or loose stools, mostly early on or after a dose rise. In the trials, digestive side effects became more common at the higher doses, and a small number of people stopped because of them. Titrating slowly is what most often prevents that, and a supervised program means someone is watching for it.
Tirzepatide is not appropriate if you or a close family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. Pancreatitis, pregnancy and some digestive conditions also need discussing. The intake form and consultation exist to catch this before anything is prescribed.
The active ingredient is tirzepatide.
