A spray tan that would give you ten good days somewhere humid will give you five or six here. Chlorine, sweat and single-digit humidity all work against it.

Most of that gap comes down to what you do before the appointment and in the first eight hours after.

The prep that actually matters

Exfoliate 24 hours before, not the morning of. You want dead skin gone and your skin's own oils back to normal. Scrubbing right before means you tan over a stripped, damp surface and it goes patchy.

Use something oil free. Scrubs with coconut or almond oil leave a film that blocks solution.

Shave or wax 24 hours ahead. Same reason. Freshly shaved skin has open follicles and you get dark dots. Waxing needs the full day.

Do all your other appointments first. Nails, lashes, waxing, facials. Anything involving water or product goes before the tan, not after.

Show up bare. No deodorant, no lotion, no makeup, no perfume. Deodorant is the big one. Aluminum reacts with the solution and turns green at the armpit. It is fixable but nobody wants to deal with it.

What to wear out

Loose, dark, and old. Cotton, not leggings. No bra straps, no tight waistbands, no seams pressing into skin. The solution is still developing on you and pressure creates lines.

Flip flops, not sneakers.

The first eight hours

Do not shower. Do not sweat. Do not touch anything with wet hands. If you get caught in a monsoon storm, you will have polka dots and there is no fixing them.

We know eight hours is inconvenient in a Phoenix summer. Book late in the day and sleep through most of it. That is what most of our clients do.

When you do rinse, warm water only, no soap, no scrubbing. Pat dry, do not rub.

Making it last past day four

Moisturize twice a day, every day. This is the single biggest factor and it is not close. Dry skin flakes, and flaking skin takes your tan with it. In our climate, morning and night is the minimum.

Shorter, cooler showers. Hot water accelerates the fade.

Skip the chlorine when you can. A pool day will cost you a day or two of tan. If you are swimming anyway, rinse right after and moisturize.

No exfoliating, no retinol on the body, no bath bombs. All of these speed up the shed.

Skip the sauna and hot tub for the first few days. Sweat opens up the fade.

About sun exposure

A spray tan gives you zero UV protection. None. Wear sunscreen exactly as you would if you were pale, because as far as your skin is concerned, you are.

What we use and what it costs

Our airbrush tans start at $65 and we mix solution depth to your skin tone rather than working from a single default. If you have never had one, ask for a lighter shade the first time. You can always come back and go deeper. Going too dark on a first appointment is the most common regret.
